Witness… This Weirdo

This weirdo is Andy Feldman, creator of Witness if You Will… and writer/director of all episodes.

Andy has been a writer since he was three years old, if you count incoherent stories with accompanying illustrations of potato creatures as writing. Normally one to spend the bulk of his time plotting out the intricacies of his stories and screenplays, Andy found incredible relief once he started performing improv, which not only helped his writing, but introduced him to the immense talent of his fellow improvisers, many of whom perform roles in these short plays.

He also doesn’t smoke, nor does he think cigarettes make him look cool.

FAQs for Andy

(presumptive 🤷‍♂️)

How did this all start?

After seeing a photo of three of my best friends at an improv jam, two dressed in Prom-appropriate outfits and one decked out all in black, I was suddenly inspired to write a play especially for them. That turned out to be “The Homecoming Queen,” episode 1. My improv company, Endgames Improv, was gracious enough to let me put on the play, as well as two others. Then COVID-19 happened and I got creatively restless. So I figured, hey, these things can make good radio plays. Why not make a podcast out of them?!

Are you a big Twilight Zone fan?

In principle, yes, although I shamefully have not seen that many episodes. But the concept of an anthology of outlandish stories with morals at the center has always spoken to me. I did grow up with R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps series and Are You Afraid of the Dark? on Nickelodeon, so if you’re desperate to trace the origins somewhere, I’d start with those.

Are you a sound engineer? The audio isn’t perfect sometimes.

Alas, you caught me. I’m not a sound engineer. But as we live in quasi-pandemic times, and not all the performers live in the Bay Area, I have to use what is at my disposal. Each episode of Seasons 1-3 was recorded over Zoom, with the actors recording their own audio separately. Not everyone has the equipment for professional sound recording (myself included), so yes, there can be an inconsistency in quality. My hope, though, is that you, dear listener, can listen passed any imperfections and focus on the stories and performances. I think those stand out more than anything. In any case, I suggest you listen with headphones, specifically over-the-ear ones if you have them, in order to gain the full experience. Starting with Season 4, episodes will be recorded mostly in person on decent mics, so celebration is in order.

Where else can I read some of your stuff?

Aww, shucks, really? You can read some of my short stories on Defiant Scribe, a really cool literary magazine that ended for a while, made a triumphant return in 2023, and then ended again. Check out some of the other stories by other writers, too. There’s a ton of talent on that site.

Where did you find all the actors?

They’re my friends! I met them all through improv. I took classes with them or met them at jams or was on teams with them. I have the funniest friends and that’s just the truth. Some of them have content floating around on the internet as well, so I will do my best to link you to them when their episodes are up. Please check it all out when you can! Support art! Support it!!!

Who does the theme song?

Why, none other than Irontom, a band from L.A. that has gone on tour with AWOLNATION and Red Hot Chili Peppers, among others. I grew up with their former keyboardist, Dan (who tours with AWOLNATION), and their music bumps. Is that what the kids are saying these days? Bumps? Well, whatever they’re saying, that’s Irontom. Check ‘em out!
